World’s First Lung Cancer Vaccine Begins Clinical Trials in 7 Countries, Including Turkey

Clinical trials for the world’s first lung cancer vaccine, known as BNT116, have commenced in seven countries, including Turkey. Developed by the German biotechnology company BioNTech, this groundbreaking vaccine aims to revolutionize the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer.

Clinical Trials Launched in 7 Countries Across 34 Research Centers

According to the official announcement made on Friday, phase one of the clinical trials for the BNT116 vaccine will be conducted in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, Hungary, Poland, Spain, and Turkey, across 34 research centers. The first phase is expected to involve 130 patients from these countries, with 20 patients participating from the UK.

mRNA Technology: The Same Used in COVID-19 Vaccines

The BNT116 vaccine uses mRNA technology, the same approach employed in the development of COVID-19 vaccines. This technology transfers synthetic RNA molecules into human cells, priming the immune system to fight cancer cells.

First Vaccination Administered in the UK

According to The Guardian, 67-year-old Janusz Racz was the first person to receive the BNT116 vaccine in the UK. Diagnosed with lung cancer in May, Racz began chemotherapy and radiotherapy shortly afterward. A specialist in artificial intelligence, Racz expressed his pride in participating in this clinical trial, emphasizing the importance of scientific progress in advancing medical treatments.

Lung Cancer Statistics in Turkey

According to the latest data from Turkey’s Ministry of Health for 2018, 30,078 people were diagnosed with lung cancer in Turkey. These figures highlight the urgent need for innovative solutions in cancer treatment.

If the BNT116 vaccine proves successful, it could offer new hope to millions of people worldwide. These clinical trials may herald a new era in cancer treatment.
